If in the next ten years we haven't managed to give a Soul to Europe, to give it spirituality and meaning, the game will be up. – Brussels, 1992
"Europe is currently facing numerous threats when it comes to its inherent values. The Dutch current issues television programme ‘Tegenlicht’ (VPRO Backlight) outlined these threats as being the refugee crisis, Putin’s propaganda against the West, and the fight of the Islamic State, claiming they are weakening the bonds of what has created the brand ‘Europe’. ‘Branding Europe’ follows the story of Europe and how a brand was created through historical events that both divided Europe, such as the two world wars, and united Europe, such as the industrial revolution and the French revolution, connecting values, such as freedom and unity, and finally ponders how these perceived threats may harm the soul of Europe."

The goal of this duo internship was to imagine a public programme for the public art of Middelburg that is owned by the Vleeshal / SBKM, and to realise a pilot event. The envisioned pilot was a guided walk, and a set of postcards with (fictional) stories, which Robin & Rosanne collected about the village of Sint Laurens, thereby building on Lara Almercegui's work and homologous book "Huizen in Sint Laurens" (Geneva: Motto Distribution 2011). Due to unresolved differences about the aims and structure of the walk across the project team – which included students of the Royal Academy of Arts The Hague (KABK), the actual event had to be cancelled.
“The village becomes the artwork. (…) Instead of art as an addition of something extra, art is a tool to understand more about the world.” - Lara Almercegui
